Museums
Húsavík Cultural Centre
There are two permanent Exhibitions in the Culture Centre the Maritime Exhibition and the new, Man and Nature – 100 years in Þingeyjarsýslur. An Art Gallery is located on the top floor and amultipurpose showroom is located on the ground floor. There is also a corner to rest, examine maps, read books from the library and a hotspot to go online.
Húsavík Exploration Museum
The Exploration Museum is dedicated to the history of human exploration, from the early explorers to the exploration of space. The main exhibition room features photographs and artifacts from the Apollo Astronaut Training near Húsavík in 1965 and 1967. Other exhibition rooms features the history of Viking Exploration, Arctic explorers and a timeline of exploration history.
Sigurgeir's Bird Museum
The goal of the Museum is to educate the visitors about birds, the biota in Lake Mývatn, and how people in the area used the lake for transport and to survive. In the Museum you can find almost all of the Icelandic nesting birds, plus about 100 of the eggs, and in a seperate exhibiton, tools that were used to fish in Lake Mývatn.
The Húsavík Whale Museum
provides interesting information about whales and their habitat.
In the 1.600m2 house you can find on display whale skeletons of several species and fascinating facts about the whales and life in the ocean.
Ystafell Transportation Museum
The main role of the Transport Museum is to collect and preserve machinery for transportation as well as information and photographs from Iceland's history of transportation.
Grenjaðarstaður Turf House
One of the most famous turf farms in Iceland, Grenjaðarstaður dates back to Iceland's settlement over a thousand years ago. It was home to the chieftains of the past, and it is an enlightening experience to visit the farm and become acquainted with the lives of Iceland's rich and famous in days gone by.
Mánárbakki Folk Museum
Twenty five kilometres to the north of Húsavík, set in an idyllic looking series of black and white turf houses, sits a folk museum showcasing relics of a bygone Iceland era.
Jón Sveinsson Memorial Museum
A museum dedicated to the writer and priest Jón Sveinsson, "Nonni".
Icelandic Aviation Museum
at Akureyri airport in new building wich is over 2200 square meters. All kinds of airplanes and other exhibits related to Icelandic Aviation history and historical photographs.
